Polish driving theory test in English: a practical guide
How to take Poland's category B theory test in English: PKK, booking, documents, timing, scoring and preparation.
Can you take the theory test in English?
Yes. English is an available language for the Polish category B theory test at WORD, the regional driving examination centre. The exam runs on a computer. Choose English when arranging your appointment and check that your booking records the correct language. Warsaw also lists Polish, German and Ukrainian options for category B.
This guide covers preparing for and taking the theory test. If you already have a foreign driving licence, ask your local licensing office which procedure applies before starting a new application. Keep that administrative question separate from choosing the language in which you want to answer exam questions.
Start with your PKK and documents
PKK means Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę, your driver candidate profile. Its number identifies you in the driving school and examination systems. Apply through the licensing authority responsible for where you live: the district authority or city office, and the relevant district office in Warsaw.
The government checklist includes a driving licence application, a medical certificate and a current photograph. For foreign applicants, it lists a passport or residence card as an identity document. Ask the office to confirm the documents required for your individual situation. Do this before paying for an examination appointment.
You may study theory independently and take the state theory test before completing practical training. The government describes this route alongside taking theory and practical lessons through a driving school. Keep your PKK number accessible whichever route you choose.
Book through the current official service
Older instructions refer to info-car.pl. The online examination booking service moved to info-kierowca.pl on 4 May 2026. Start from your chosen WORD's current booking link. The new service requires digital identity verification. If you cannot complete that step, contact the WORD customer service office about booking in person.
Prepare your PKK number and personal details. Choose category B, the theory examination, your centre and an available appointment. Select English and check the final details before paying. Save the confirmation and check the examination location as well as the date. If the form does not offer the expected language, ask the centre before completing payment.
Fees vary between voivodeships in 2026. Warsaw is one example: its category B theory test costs PLN 56.98 under the rate effective from 1 January 2026. Check your own WORD's current price list rather than treating Warsaw's fee as a national price.
Understand the 32 questions and the pass mark
The examination contains 20 basic knowledge questions and 12 specialist questions for your licence category. The basic section uses yes or no answers. In the specialist section, choose A, B or C. Each question has one correct answer.
Questions carry 3, 2 or 1 point according to their importance for road safety. The maximum score is 74 points and you need at least 68 to pass. Think in points when reviewing practice results. A wrong three-point answer affects the total more than a wrong one-point answer. Do not use a fixed number of permitted mistakes as your target.
Practise the timing and question sequence
The standard theory test lasts up to 25 minutes. For a basic question, you have 20 seconds to read the question, followed by 15 seconds to answer. For a specialist question, you have 50 seconds in total to read and answer.
You cannot return to an earlier question after moving on. You can change your selection while the current question remains open and time remains. Leaving a question unanswered earns zero points.
Practise with these limits before your appointment. During timed practice, resist pausing to search for a rule. Finish the test first, then investigate uncertain answers. This gives you a useful list of what needs work without turning every practice exam into an exercise with notes.
Study the official English wording and the rule behind it
The Ministry of Infrastructure publishes the official question catalogue and associated multimedia. Info-Car's booking instructions confirm that the examination bank includes English questions. Use the official English wording when preparing for the English exam. When choosing study materials, check their stated source and update date.
Build a small vocabulary list as you study. Include unfamiliar terms for road features, vehicle equipment and manoeuvres. Explain each term in your own words. Read the entire question before choosing an answer, paying particular attention to whether it asks what is permitted, required or prohibited.
Work by topic before relying on complete mock tests. Try separate sessions on signs, junctions, speed rules and emergency situations. For every wrong answer, write down the rule you missed and the detail that mattered in the picture or video. Revisit that question later without looking at your note. If you know the answer but cannot explain it, study the rule again.
On the day and after the result
Bring a valid identity document. WORD guidance lists a passport and residence card among accepted documents. Check your document's expiry date before leaving and allow time to find the correct building.
The examiner checks your identity. You then receive instructions for the computer system and a practice stage before the scored test. Use that stage to check how answers are selected. Check your personal details on screen and raise any discrepancy with the examiner.
Your score appears after the test. WORD Warsaw states that a positive theory result is currently valid indefinitely. If you fail, Warsaw's procedure includes viewing incorrectly answered questions. Use that opportunity to identify topics for revision, then arrange another paid attempt. Passing theory is one stage of obtaining a driving licence, so confirm the next training or examination step for your application.
FAQ
Do I need to answer the questions in Polish?
No. Category B theory is available in English. Select that language when booking and check the confirmation before your appointment.
Can I prepare without attending theory classes?
Yes. Government guidance allows independent theory preparation followed by the state theory test. Practical training is a separate requirement on the first-licence route.
Can I skip a question and return later?
No. The sequence moves forward. An unanswered question earns zero points, so practise making your decision within the allotted time.
Is PLN 56.98 the fee everywhere in Poland?
No. That is the verified Warsaw theory fee effective from 1 January 2026. Fees vary by voivodeship, so check your selected WORD.
