What is the purpose of the triangle, which is a mandatory equipment for passenger cars?

Why?
The picture shows a red reflective warning triangle. One of its purposes is to warn other drivers about a vehicle immobilised on the road by a breakdown. It is not used to mark roof loads or replace faulty rear position lights while driving.
