How should the external mirrors of the passenger car be positioned?

Why?
Adjust the exterior mirror to show a small part of your car's side and as much of the road behind as possible. In the photo, the car's side appears along the mirror's inner edge and provides a reference for judging the position of other vehicles. Filling half the mirror with the side window reduces your view of the road, while hiding the car's side completely removes that reference.
