While driving a car in wintertime and you see a blue, half-conscious, freezing person on the shoulder, how should you help him?
aGive him a hot drink.
bGive him alcohol.
cTake him to the car, cover him and have him warm up slowly.
Why?
Bluish skin and reduced consciousness in someone exposed to cold indicate a need for urgent medical help. Call 112 or 999, gently move them into the car, cover them and warm them gradually while monitoring their breathing. Do not give them drinks, as impaired consciousness makes it possible for liquid to enter their airway. Alcohol also speeds up heat loss.
